Robert Kelly Small Works and Mel Kendrick
Sculptures & Cast Paper Works at David Floria

This is the first two person exhibition of works by Robert Kelly and Mel
Kendrick. The exhibition juxtaposes small oil and collage on panel paintings
by Robert Kelly with sculptures in carved wood and cast paper pieces by Mel
Kendrick.

The idea for this exhibition came from Robert Kelly who admires the work of
Mel Kendrick and suggested that his paintings have certain things in
common with Kendrick’s sculptures. He thought that his process of fractured
and rearranged geometric compositions was conceptually akin to Kendrick’s
geometric variations in sliced and reconstructed wood.

They both also have an affinity for subtle and rich surface treatments. The
resulting visual conversation between the two strong bodies of work in this
exhibition is stimulating and rewarding.

Robert Kelly’s paintings are precisely composed geometric explorations of
line, shape and color. Viewers are reminded of early Constructivists such as
Malevich and Lissitzky as well as Modernists Mondrian, Calder, Ellsworth
Kelly and Bauhaus master Herbert Bayer. Robert Kelly, however, makes his
contribution to these venerable traditions by constructing his painted
compositions over collaged vintage film posters or weather charts. He rubs
finely ground ash into the paint surface to suggest age and depth. These
explorations, communicated through a skilled technique, refined over a 20
year career, achieve a mature balance that is both formally rigorous and
visually exciting.

Mel Kendrick’s sculptures are smart and deceptively simple variations on
themes derived from formal abstraction and his working process. He slices
blocks of wood with power tools, reconfigures the parts and reconstructs
them into totemic and architectonic forms that have a monumental presence
whether they are 6 inches or 6 feet in height.

He works with intriguing ideas involving flipping inside/outside, or
positive/negative volumes and shapes. For example, in his Stacked White
Block series,Kendrick slices the corners off a block with a band-saw and
attaches them to the bottom of the block where they become the sculpture’s
legs. The quirky shape of the negative spaces between the legs is painted
on the side of the sculpture above. Kendrick’s cast paper pieces are elegant
bas relief, black and white compositions of ovoid and spiky forms. They are
castings of pigmented pulp using latex molds of carved wood topigraphical
reliefs. These works relate to the same concerns as his sculptures, ideas of
wounding and repair.

Mel Kendrick was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1949. He graduated
from Hunter Collage with a Master of Arts in 1973. He began showing his
works in the mid-seventies to critical acclaim, including a cover article in
ArtNews in 1991. He lives and works in New York City.

His works can be found in numerous public collections including The
Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney
Museum of American Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the High Museum
of Art in Atlanta, Georgia.

Robert Kelly was born in 1956 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He earned a BA
from Harvard In 1978. He lives and works in New York City. His paintings are
in numerous public collections including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the
Milwaukee Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Art, Santa Fe, and the Fogg
Museum, in Cambridge.

Daniel Sprick Solo Show:
Everyday Observations in
Art

Daniel Sprick produces paintings where
objects appear familiar at first glance,
but upon closer examination, one
notices that some key attribute has been
withheld or altered.

His engaging images are featured in a
solo show at Gallery 1261 this
September, allowing viewers the
opportunity to delve into the translations
of what he sees around him in everyday
life.

His images surround the process of
contemplation - the odd associations
one makes, and the way one’s inner
world may spontaneously ignite as a
result of one’s prolonged interaction with
a fixed subject.

Opening Reception Friday, Sept. 19,
2008 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Exhibition From Friday, Sept. 19, 2008 to

Art Students League of Denver
This year’s 16th annual Summer Art Market Best of
Show, Sara Sisun

Summer Art Market provides artists with an opportunity to showcase and sell their
work directly to the public. This event assists in supporting the local art community
and the Art Students League of Denver alike.

Awards were presented to artists showcasing talent in a variety of categories. “Best
of Show” was presented to Sara Sisun, for her brilliant display. “I can't thank the
League enough for the encouragement, the classes, everything. It's been a huge
part of my life since I was about six years old.”  Currently Sisun is a studio art major
at Stanford University . “It's so nice to know that the League is still there for me,
because it has been all along.” Sisun’s history at the Art Students League was
fundamental to her growth as an artist.

“Winning best of show means a lot to me as I am hoping to be a professional
painter, and winning the award was encouraging. I believe that my painting
improves when I am more confident, as I am more willing to push ideas or
techniques.” Sisun’s work is often non traditional and is proud about receiving
recognition for thinking outside the box.

Emilio Lobato, a member of the Board of Directors, was a facilitator to the judges of
the event and privy their discussion. “I was struck at how quickly and decisively they
came to a conclusion about Sara.  For about 30 seconds before the official tallying
began, the judges were quick to discover that their over-all favorite was Sara.
Regardless of her age, they considered her the best.”

Schofield uses both cold wax and hot encaustic to render his finely detailed work. He employs luminous, heavily worked
surfaces. The paintings are built from numerous layers which are then scraped, scratched, gouged into and then melted
away to reveal the process that he uses.

Earl Schofield holds a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art (1994) and an MFA from the Art Institute of Boston/Lesley
University.

JULES FEIFFER - Exhibition of Political Cartoons,
Illustrations, Drawings and Prints at Michele Mosko
Fine Art

Exhibit to Coincide with the Democratic National Convention

Jules Feiffer, the Pulitzer-prize winning comic artist whose internationally
syndicated cartoon ran for 42 years in the Village Voice, weaved the social,
political, and personal into a perceptive, challenging, and often hilarious mix.

The artist's unique sensibility permeates a wide range of creative work: from his
Obie Award-winning play Little Murders (a prophetic vision of random urban
violence), to his screenplay for Carnal Knowledge (a controversial examination
of the sex wars), to his Oscar-winning anti-military short subject animation,
Munro.

Feiffer's extraordinary cartoons have been collected into 19 books, and have
been published in The New Yorker, Esquire, Playboy, and The Nation. He was
commissioned by The New York Times to create its first op-ed page comic strip
that ran monthly until 2000, In his mid-sixties, taking inspiration from his three
daughters spanning three generations, he reinvented himself as a children's
book author. His first book, The Man in the Ceiling, was selected by Publisher's
Weekly and the New York Public Library, as one of the year's best children's
books. Two other award-winning books, Bark George, and I Lost My Bear, are
being adapted into animated cartoons. Presently, Feiffer is at work, creating a
full-length animated feature for Sony Pictures.
This timely exhibit featuring over forty of Mr. Feiffer's contemporary prints, book
illustrations and original political and humorous cartoons (dating from the 60's to
a recent caricature of Barack Obama created for this show) opens at Michele
Mosko Fine Art in Denver on August 20, 2008 - one week prior to the Democratic
National Convention and will remain on display and for sale through Saturday,
November 1, 2008. Interestingly, Feiffer was a delegate for the Democratic
National Convention in Chicago in 1968, and several cartoons in the show are of
that era. In order to accommodate clientele, the Gallery has extended viewing
hours, and will stay open daily from 11a.m. to 6p.m. the week of the convention
from August 23 thru August 31st.

The artist reception for Mr. Feiffer is scheduled for Friday, September 19th from 5
to 8 pm and RSVPs are requested, as space is limited.  Additional files of
artwork to be exhibited are available upon request.
