Aaron Smith: Estofada. Artist Reception: Sat. March 1, 6-8 PM. March 1 - April 5, 2008 at the Koplin
Del Rio Gallery, 6031 Washington Boulevard, Culver City.

Los Angeles artist Aaron Smith emerges from the studio after more than three years with a series of enigmatic oil
paintings that revel in contradictions. Derived from opulent objects; Gothic and Baroque sculpture originally created
to spiritually inspire; the paintings strip the all-male characters of context, suspending them in an existential vacuum.
Blown up to sometimes monumental proportions, the figures, rather than looking majestic, seem exposed and
fragile. Turbulent brushwork and vibrant colors energize the paintings’ surfaces while threatening to overwhelm the
spiritual ambience as well as the figures’ structure. For the past ten years, Aaron Smith has been an Associate
Professor at  Art Center College of Design in Pasadena where he also serves as his department’s Associate Chair.

March 15 - April 13, 2008: Agustin Castillo. James Gray Gallery, 2525 Michigan Ave, Building D4,
Santa Monica, CA 90404.
Born in the city of San Jose, California, and living most of his life in Mexico, Agustin Castillo has been influenced by
many cultures.  Naturally, his artworks are fusions of amazingly crafted materials and methods.  Castillo notes, “I
always try to develop concepts that would help to canalize my emotions, ideas, and visual interpretations.”  Linking
several canvases with such materials as resin, acrylic, and paste, he adds texture and dimension to a very powerful
visual encounter.  Castillo’s complex process culminates to a seemingly minimal piece.  The onlooker’s gaze slowly
travels through the emotive and subtle colors and textures of his three-dimensional, abstract paintings. Opening
Reception: Saturday, March 15 from 6-9pm.

Renowned Cuban painter and sculptor Carlos Estévez will have his fifth solo exhibition at
Couturier Gallery, which will include recent oil paintings as well as sculpture. These works
continue Estévez’s investigation of human psychology along with universality and nature.

Through these current works Estévez’s represents both the physical appearance and the
interior complexities and dualities of human nature.

…each artwork is a battle field where things that are going to happen are a mystery, a
magic moment where all demons and angels from nocturnal and day dreams, from
human passions of all kinds, from the most sublime to the most banal, memories,
thoughts, premonitions and visions, as well as the unforeseen contribution of the
subconscious all meet.
- Carlos Estévez.
